While not typically known for producing rum, there is a small distillery on the island of Bonaire that makes several expressions under the Rom Rincon brand name. The Cadushy Distillery, located in the brand's namesake town of Rincon, produces pot still rum in small batches from imported molasses (since the island's climate is too dry to grow sugar cane). The rum is then infused with locally grown spices and aged for varying amounts of time before being bottled on-site.
The distillery is also the only place in the world that produces spirits from cactus, specifically the kadushi cactus which is plentiful in Bonaire. The most popular of these is the neon-green hued Cadushy of Bonaire liqueur, which has a sweet lime flavor and is distilled from a mash made with dried cactus and local sorghum (added because the cactus did not have enough sugar content to produce alcohol on its own). Cadushy Vodka and Salu! Gin are also produced from this mash. Other products from the distillery include five additional liqueurs, one for each of the Dutch Caribbean islands (Kukui of Aruba, Calbas of Curacao, Gold of Statia, and Spices of Saba) and Orange Liqueur for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Captain Don's Whisky, named after the founder of the diving industry in Bonaire, rounds out their portfolio of spirits.
Although it is a 45 minute drive from Kralendijk, a visit to The Cadushy Distillery is worth the trip. It is housed in several restored historic buildings (including the Cinelandia Cinema) and features a tranquil garden with plenty of shaded seating and a tasting bar offering samples of all of their expressions along with an extensive menu of tasty cocktails. During the tour, you'll learn not only about how the spirits are produced, but also about the history of the city of Rincon.
Check out the Cadushy website for more information about their products and distillery tours:
Bonaire's most famous attraction is its spectacular reef and abundant underwater life. Shore diving is especially popular here since many of the best reefs are easily accessible from land. Just stop by one of the many drive-through dive shops to pick up tanks, then drive along the coast, pull over at one of the bright yellow rocks, and walk right in!
This 14,000-acre park spans the entire north-west portion of Bonaire and is home to scenic ocean lookouts, interesting geological formations, a lighthouse, and plenty of wild flamingos! Plan for at least 4 hours to drive the "long route" (which is unpaved and quite bumpy in parts) and see all of the beautiful above-water scenery this park has to offer.
Located in downtown Kralendijk, this true tiki bar is decorated with plenty of thatch and bamboo and offers an incredible selection of original craft cocktails made with local ingredients. These beautifully garnished drinks are served in unique tiki mugs from around the globe. In addition, their growing selection of over 100 rums is one of the most extensive in the Caribbean and the bartenders here are top-notch.
